Symptoms of sleep apnea may include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Repeatedly stopping and restarting breathing during sleep
  • Gasping for air while sleeping
  • Waking up with a dry mouth
  • Insomnia
  • Hypersomnia (daytime sleepiness)
  • Trouble focusing or paying attention while awake
  • Irritability

Complications of sleep apnea can be serious, if not treated, and include:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Heart problems such as recurrent heart attack, stroke, and abnormal heartbeats
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Complications with surgery and medications
